Microsoft is bringing its Xbox app to TCL smart TVs and, at the same time, opening Xbox Cloud Gaming to players without a subscription - a two-track expansion that widens the service's reach while tightening limits for existing subscribers.
Microsoft announced the TCL partnership on September 4, saying the Xbox app will arrive on select TCL smart TVs "in the coming months," giving millions of TCL users across more than 25 countries access to Xbox Cloud Gaming. Players will be able to stream Game Pass titles - or select games they own - directly on the TV, with no console required. All they need is the app, a supported controller and cloud playtime, which is included with Game Pass or can be bought separately. Saves, achievements and friends lists travel across TV, console and PC.
TCL joins a growing list of TV partners: Hisense started adding the Xbox app to its VIDAA OS televisions earlier this year, and many Samsung, LG and Amazon Fire TV devices already support it.
The move coincides with a strategic opening of the service. In November, Microsoft will introduce a pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming, letting anyone stream without subscribing to Game Pass - aimed squarely at people who do not own an Xbox console. Microsoft is also testing free, ad-supported cloud gaming with Xbox Insiders, which could roll out soon.
At the same time, Microsoft is capping monthly cloud playtime for subscribers: Game Pass Ultimate members will be limited to 15 hours of cloud access a month, Premium members to 10, and Essential members to just 5, with additional time available as purchasable hour bundles. The result is a deliberate two-sided strategy: broader access for casual players, stricter limits for heavy users, and a business model that makes cloud gaming less dependent on the traditional subscription.
