Two decades after it was recorded and more than a decade after it became the most notorious album in music, some of Wu-Tang Clan's "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin" can finally be heard, The Verge reports. The exposure is associated with journalist Pablo Torre — the album's most substantial public outing since it was pressed as a single physical copy.
The object is the point. Recorded in secret over roughly six years and mixed in Marrakesh, the album exists as one copy, housed in a hand-carved silver and nickel box. It was sold in 2015 to Martin Shkreli for a reported $2 million under a contract that barred commercial release for 88 years — until 2103, a term understood to track the copyright period. Shkreli was later convicted of securities fraud and the album was forfeited to the US government. In 2021 the US Marshals Service auctioned it to the crypto collective PleasrDAO for a reported $4 million.
PleasrDAO kept the terms: private listening sessions, tokenised fragments of the story, but no streaming release. Access was always going to be granted by permission, never by purchase — which is what makes the album the purest test case in the digital-ownership debate now playing out in the video-game bill before Congress and in every end-user licence agreement a user clicks through.
Technically, the album is a normal digital recording. Legally, its scarcity is a contract, not a constraint. Anyone who obtained a copy could duplicate it perfectly; only the 2103 clause, an NDA-wrapped listening regime and the threat of litigation make it rare. The value rests entirely on law plus discretion — the same combination the music industry spent the CD era trying, and largely failing, to enforce against ordinary listeners.
That framing explains the interest. A work whose uniqueness is paper-thin is an unusually clear window onto what "ownership" of digital goods actually means. Buyers of games are now arguing, in Congress, for rights that Shkreli and later PleasrDAO never held — and Wu-Tang's album shows how durable an artificial restriction can be while everyone with standing chooses to respect it.
