Meta announced on Tuesday that it will now allow AI agents of your choosing to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging — the service that lets companies connect with customers through WhatsApp conversations.
The process was previously cumbersome, requiring developers to move between the Developer Console, Meta's Business Manager, the API reference, and their code editor. Now, developers can describe in natural language what needs to be done, and their preferred AI agent handles it.
The new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server (MCP stands for Model Context Protocol) directly connects AI coding agents to the WhatsApp Business Platform. During setup, the agent handles account creation, phone number verification, Cloud API registration, Terms of Service checks, and payment method configuration.
Beyond initial setup, businesses can use the agent to create or edit messaging templates, test webhooks, and monitor potentially failing checks like business verification status. A companion Meta Social Technologies MCP server can also be used to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors.
Meta is expanding its existing MCP server lineup — which already covers ad management and app configuration — to cover business onboarding. Many other major tech companies offer MCP servers for their services, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft.
The move signals Meta's continued bet that MCP is becoming the standard interface layer for AI agents to interact with external platforms, and that reducing friction in business onboarding is a competitive advantage for WhatsApp's enterprise ambitions.
