A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage crashed into the Moon early on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, creating a fresh impact crater and adding to the growing inventory of human-made debris scattered across the lunar surface.

The 45-foot (13.8-meter) upper stage struck the far side near Einstein Crater at approximately 2:35 a.m. EDT (06:35 UTC) at an estimated speed of 5,400 mph (8,700 km/h). Astronomers had tracked the object, designated 2025-010D, since it launched on January 15, 2025, carrying Firefly's Blue Ghost Mission 1 and ispace's Resilience lunar lander. Blue Ghost landed successfully in March 2025 and Resilience crashed in June 2025, but the rocket stage itself was left drifting in space, where its decaying orbit eventually intersected the Moon.

Because the impact occurred on the sunlit far side, no flash was visible from Earth and no clear image of the collision was captured. NASA attempted to observe the event, and scientists expect data from lunar orbiters to be released in the coming days and weeks. The results could reveal details of the newly excavated crater — estimated at roughly 89 feet (27 meters) wide — and offer a rare glimpse at the aftermath of an artificial impact.

The crash also spotlights a quietly growing problem: space junk is no longer just an Earth-orbit concern. According to the BBC, about 3,000 human-made objects now sit on the Moon, weighing a combined 209 tons, from Soviet Luna probes and Apollo-era hardware to spent upper stages. The European Space Agency tracks roughly 35,000 objects in space overall, and more than 100 lunar missions are planned over the next decade by agencies and commercial companies, including NASA's planned Artemis moonbase.

Experts warn that without better tracking and international rules for disposing of spacecraft, debris could endanger future robotic missions and lunar bases, contaminate pristine regions that preserve billions of years of geological history, and even disturb historic Apollo landing sites.
