Samsung Electronics America is cutting 739 jobs at its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey office as the South Korean tech giant prepares to relocate its U.S. consumer electronics headquarters to Texas by the end of 2026, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) reviewed by Reuters.

The affected unit, Samsung Electronics America (SEA), handles sales and marketing for Samsung's displays, phones, TVs, and home appliances in the United States and employs approximately 1,200 workers in New Jersey. The cuts do not affect Samsung's semiconductor business.

Samsung said in a statement that most affected employees had been offered relocation opportunities to Texas, and that it was "incorrect to characterize the changes as layoffs." The company added that the restructuring was designed to "ensure our roles align to key business priorities."

The move is part of a broader corporate relocation trend that has seen numerous technology and financial firms shift operations from the Northeast to Texas, drawn by lower taxes, cheaper real estate, and a business-friendly regulatory environment. Samsung first announced the headquarters move in June, citing growth goals and business transformation.

"This process may lead to changes in our workforce structure, such as employees who are unable to relocate, or certain functions that are optimized," Samsung's statement said. The WARN notice, required by U.S. law for mass layoffs or plant closures, was first reported by Reuters on Friday.

The relocation represents a significant blow to New Jersey's tech workforce. U.S. Representative Josh Gottheimer, whose district includes Englewood Cliffs, had previously highlighted SEA's presence as a major employer in the region. Samsung did not disclose how many employees have accepted relocation offers versus how many will be separated from the company.
