Heise reports that Volkswagen is now offering the ID. Cross with a smaller battery — a base model introduced after the fact, filling out the entry level of the electric model's lineup.

The pattern is a familiar one in EV launches: the vehicle debuts with larger packs and higher trims, and the volume-oriented entry version follows once early adopters have been served. A smaller pack lowers the purchase price at the cost of range — the trade-off that decides whether the car reaches fleet buyers and first-time EV customers rather than only upgraders.

For Volkswagen the timing is competitive: pricing pressure keeps defining the segment, and a cheaper ID. Cross variant gives dealers an answer to rivals that already field entry versions.

Capacity, range figures and pricing for the new base version are in Heise's report.
