Joby Aviation, the electric air taxi company known for its eVTOL development program, announced on September 18 that its autonomy technology has completed a historic milestone: the first fully autonomous flight across the United States.

The flight

A modified Cessna 208B Caravan equipped with Joby's autonomy system flew 3,199 miles from California to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Throughout the entire journey, the onboard safety pilot made zero control inputs — the aircraft flew, navigated, and landed entirely under autonomous control.

The eastbound transcontinental flight is the culmination of a month-long tour that also included westbound milestones. Joby framed the achievement as a demonstration that its autonomy stack — originally developed for its eVTOL air taxi program — can scale to conventional fixed-wing aircraft and long-distance missions.

Why it matters

While Joby is primarily known for its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi, this flight demonstrates the broader applicability of its autonomy technology. The ability to fly a conventional aircraft autonomously across the continent has implications for cargo delivery, military logistics, and eventually passenger aviation.
