General Motors is fitting out its Lansing Delta Township plant to build hybrid vehicles, part of a commitment of more than $2 billion across the Lansing region over the next several years — including $1.25 billion for the factory itself. It is the latest correction to a strategy that spent years betting on battery-electric vehicles alone.
GM also plans to restructure an already-awarded Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant with the Department of Energy and redirect the money to hybrid production in Lansing. The $500 million was awarded under the Biden administration to convert a different Lansing plant for electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles; according to GM, the funds were never released.
The plant currently builds the gasoline-powered Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, and turned out a record 291,000 vehicles in 2025. GM did not say when hybrids would go on sale. People familiar with the plans told TechCrunch to expect hybrids across several brands rather than a single line; Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported that hybrid versions of the Traverse, Enclave and Acadia will be built there.
Hybrids are in demand in the US, helped by higher fuel prices and a wider menu of models. Toyota leads hybrid sales, Honda follows, and Ford sold roughly 228,000 hybrids in 2025 while gaining share. GM lagged: the 2024 Corvette E-Ray was for years its only electrified hybrid, and it sold just 2,444 units last year. It has since been discontinued; deliveries of the hybrid Corvette ZR1X began in March, with a Grand Sport X due next year.
GM had explicitly skipped hybrids in favour of battery-electric cars and invested billions converting its lineup. The end of the federal EV tax credit and slower-than-expected demand changed the arithmetic. The EVs remain — Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ — but sales fell year over year. The hybrid is less a conversion than an insurance policy: a powertrain that sells without new charging infrastructure and helps fleets meet emissions rules.
