Leading PC makers HP, Asus and Acer have started using small amounts of chips from China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) amid an unprecedented memory shortage fueled by demand for AI infrastructure, Nikkei Asia reported. The move is a breakthrough for the sanctioned Chinese chipmaker, which listed on Shanghai's STAR Market on July 27 in a record-breaking IPO, and it underscores how deeply the AI boom is reshuffling the established memory pecking order.

CXMT is among the biggest beneficiaries of the global memory crunch that has pushed DRAM and NAND prices to record highs. AI data centers are consuming so much memory that analysts speak of a "RAMageddon"; the major memory makers are reporting record cash flows — Nikkei puts the industry's combined inflow at about $90 billion amid the AI gold rush. In this environment, Western PC brands have begun qualifying CXMT DRAM as an additional source, even as the U.S. maintains export restrictions against the Chinese manufacturer.

The PC makers are treading carefully, according to Nikkei: the volumes used are small, and the companies are anxious not to anger their top suppliers Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix. HP, Asus and Acer declined to comment, while CXMT said it continues to evaluate ways to expand its customer base outside China.

The timing is notable. Just a week after its record IPO, CXMT is reportedly already planning a second fab in Beijing and is in talks for roughly $9 billion in funding. Breaking into leading Western PC brands would hand China's memory industry a new sales channel — and complicate the geopolitical calculus: the more Western devices depend on Chinese memory chips, the harder new restrictions become. For PC buyers, the extra source means more supply in a market plagued by record prices — even if manufacturers are unlikely to advertise exactly which component comes from which fab.
