Anthropic said Wednesday it is building an in-house team to design custom chips for its Claude AI models, confirming an earlier Reuters report, as the startup responds to a shortage of chips needed to power and develop ever more advanced AI.
The company is hiring engineers with experience across the hardware and software stack to help co-design custom chips and AI models that make Claude run faster and more efficiently at the scale customers demand. Job listings reportedly advertise salaries as high as $485,000.
Anthropic frames the effort as the latest step in a 'multi-chip strategy': it will continue to rely on silicon from Amazon Web Services, Google, Nvidia and AMD while its own designs mature. It gave no timeline and did not say whether it intends to manufacture the chips itself.
Designing an advanced AI chip can cost roughly half a billion dollars, according to industry sources, once skilled engineers and flawless manufacturing are factored in.
The move makes Anthropic the latest AI giant to chase in-house silicon — following Google and Amazon — as the global AI chip shortage forces even software-first companies to secure their own supply.
