Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng has declared that China is close to producing a 'killer' vehicle that will beat Tesla's best-selling Model Y, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The Volkswagen-backed company is positioning itself at the forefront of China's push to dominate the global EV market. Xpeng is developing its own AI chips and autonomous driving software, moving beyond just car manufacturing into vertically integrated technology development — a strategy that mirrors Tesla's own approach.

Tesla's Model Y remains the top-selling electric vehicle globally and holds the second position in China's competitive EV market, where it faces intense competition from domestic brands including BYD, Xiaomi, and Li Auto. China is the world's largest EV market, accounting for the majority of global electric vehicle sales.

Xpeng's G6 SUV has been positioned as a direct Model Y competitor, priced approximately 20% below Tesla's offering. The company's ambitious claims reflect the broader trend of Chinese automakers rapidly closing the technology gap with established players while competing aggressively on price.

The competition extends beyond finished vehicles. Xpeng develops its own technology stack and also supplies technology to other automakers, mirroring the supplier model that has made companies like Mobileye and Bosch dominant in automotive technology.

China's EV ecosystem has matured rapidly, with multiple domestic brands now offering vehicles with competitive range, autonomous driving features, and build quality that rivals or exceeds many Western competitors. BYD outsold Tesla globally in Q2 2026 to maintain its position as the world's top EV seller.
