VoiceStudio, a community-driven open-source project, has rapidly climbed the GitHub trending charts with over 2,632 stars in a single day, positioning itself as a serious local-first alternative to cloud-based voice AI services like ElevenLabs.

The project packages 16 text-to-speech engines and 11 speech-to-recognition engines into a unified desktop application built on Tauri v2 (Rust) with a React frontend and a FastAPI Python backend. It runs on macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows, Linux, and Docker, with GPU acceleration via CUDA, Apple Silicon MPS/MLX, and ROCm.

Key capabilities include zero-shot voice cloning from a 5–15 second reference clip, voice design from natural-language descriptions, multilingual video dubbing with speaker preservation, dictation with local LLM cleanup, and audiobook production with multi-voice scripts and EPUB/PDF import. The default OmniVoice engine supports over 600 languages.

All data stays on the user's machine by default. VoiceStudio includes AudioSeal watermarking for synthetic speech provenance. The project is licensed AGPL-3.0, with a local REST/SSE/WebSocket API, an OpenAI-compatible audio endpoint, and an MCP server for AI agent integration.

The surge reflects growing developer demand for local-first AI tools that avoid cloud dependencies, subscription costs, and data privacy concerns.
