Tesla has officially confirmed it will unveil the second-generation Roadster on October 1, posting Go for launch alongside a graphic showing 10.01 on X formerly Twitter on September 12.
The reveal marks nearly nine years since the car was first announced by Elon Musk in November 2017 — an unprecedented timeline for a vehicle reveal that has been pushed back repeatedly. The graphic accompanying the announcement hints at SpaceX-developed cold gas thrusters, a feature Musk has long promised would allow the Roadster to fly in some way.
The second-generation Roadster has been the subject of considerable controversy. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly criticized Musk in 2025 over the lengthy delay after paying a 50,000 dollar reservation fee, with Musk claiming Altman had received a refund. The Information recently reported that the 2017 design had been completely abandoned in favor of an entirely new yet-to-be-revealed design.
Musk has acknowledged that even after the October 1 reveal, the Roadster will not enter production for another 12 to 18 months meaning actual deliveries are unlikely before mid-2028 at the earliest.
