SpaceX's all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the startup behind the AI coding assistant Cursor, officially closed on August 14, 2026. In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, SpaceX confirmed the merger became effective that day, making Cursor a wholly owned subsidiary of the rocket-and-satellite company in a deal valued at roughly $60 billion.

The transaction was announced in June, just days after SpaceX's blockbuster public listing, as the company moved to extend its business beyond launch services and Starlink broadband into AI compute. In its second-quarter earnings, released earlier this month, SpaceX reported revenue of $7.8 billion, up 92 percent year over year, with new AI compute agreements among the biggest drivers of margin expansion. The Cursor deal was structured entirely in SpaceX stock, using the newly public shares as acquisition currency.

With the closing, Anysphere's engineering team joins SpaceX's AI software division. The company plans to deploy Cursor's coding models across its own engineering pipeline — C++ and Rust code for flight software and engine controllers, automated routing code for Starlink's optical inter-satellite links, ground-segment databases and hardware-in-the-loop simulations for Starship. Beyond internal use, the acquisition gives SpaceX a developer- and consumer-facing AI product to compete head-to-head with OpenAI and Anthropic in the rapidly consolidating AI coding market.

The completion marks one of the largest technology acquisitions ever executed by a space company and one of the biggest all-stock deals of the AI era — a sign that the battle for the AI coding agent, widely seen as the beachhead for agentic AI, is now being fought with rocket money.
