A Historic Moment for the AI Chip Industry
SEOUL/NEW YORK — SK Hynix, the world's second-largest memory chipmaker, launched its approximately $28 billion American Depositary Receipt (ADR) listing on Monday, kicking off the bookbuilding process for what is set to become one of the largest US stock listings in history.
The South Korean semiconductor giant plans to issue 17.79 million new ADR shares, with trading on the Nasdaq expected to begin on July 10. The offering is being managed by a syndicate of Wall Street's biggest banks, including BofA Securities, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase.
Riding the AI Memory Supercycle
SK Hynix's blockbuster listing is the culmination of an extraordinary year driven by the global AI boom. The company's shares have surged more than 280% in 2026, propelling its market capitalization above $1 trillion as investors piled into companies seen as key beneficiaries of the insatiable demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips.
SK Hynix dominates the HBM market with approximately 60% market share, according to Counterpoint Research. These specialized memory chips are essential components in the AI accelerators manufactured by NVIDIA and other companies that power the world's largest large language models and inference systems.
'What is clear is that SK Hynix is definitely the top-notch player in HBM. It has the best product and the lowest cost,' said MS Hwang, Director at Counterpoint Research. 'Its operating margin is the best.'
Supercharging Expansion
The company is investing aggressively to maintain its lead. Key projects include:
- The Yongin Cluster — A massive new campus of memory chip fabrication plants in South Korea, set to begin operations in 2027 - Indiana Packaging Plant — SK Hynix's first US manufacturing facility, a $4 billion advanced chip packaging plant - Domestic capacity expansion — Part of a broader 3,200 trillion won ($2.07 trillion) pledge by South Korea's chipmakers to expand capacity between 2026 and 2040
'We expect to elevate our status as a global company by broadening our touchpoints in the United States, the epicenter of AI technological innovation,' SK Hynix said in its regulatory filing.
The Bigger Picture: A Memory Chip Boom
The listing comes on the same day Samsung Electronics is expected to flag an 18-fold jump in quarterly operating profit — to a record 86 trillion won ($56.35 billion) — driven by the same AI memory demand. Samsung, SK Hynix, and US rival Micron have all seen their market valuations surpass $1 trillion this year as DRAM and NAND prices continue to climb.
Analysts at Citi Research reported that average selling prices for DRAM and NAND rose 44% and 53% quarter-on-quarter respectively in Q2 2026.
However, analysts at JPMorgan have sounded a cautious note, warning that AI memory's rapidly rising share of cloud service providers' capital expenditure — estimated at 52% this year and expected to exceed 70% next year — may not be sustainable.
A New Chapter for Korean Tech on Wall Street
The listing represents a landmark moment for South Korean technology companies seeking greater access to US capital markets. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics together account for more than 40% of South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index.
If priced at the top of its range, SK Hynix's US listing could surpass some of the largest IPOs in American history, rivaling Alibaba's 2014 debut.
