The end of an era is coming for PlayStation. Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it will end physical game disc production for all new titles starting in January 2028, transitioning to a digital-only release model.
In a PlayStation Blog post, Sid Shuman, Senior Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that "new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only," with physical disc production halted entirely for new PlayStation games.
Shuman described the move as "a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs." The change will not affect games that have already been released or will release before January 2028 on disc.
The announcement comes amid a broader industry shift toward digital distribution. The news follows recent confirmation that Grand Theft Auto VI — one of the most anticipated games in history, launching this November — will not receive a physical disc release at launch, instead offering a "code-in-box" approach.
Sony's decision marks the culmination of a years-long transition. The PlayStation 5 launched with both a standard disc-drive version and a digital-only edition, and over the current console generation, digital game sales have steadily grown to dominate the market. Sony argues the transition "will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today."
The move is certain to generate debate among collectors, preservationists, and gamers who prefer physical ownership. Physical discs allow for resale, lending, and continued play without dependence on online storefronts. Sony has not detailed how it will address game preservation concerns in a digital-only future, nor whether it plans any archival or backward-compatibility programs.
For the millions of PlayStation gamers worldwide, 2028 will mark a definitive threshold: the year PlayStation as a physical medium ceases to exist, and the PlayStation Store becomes the only gateway to new games.
