Safety ratings rarely produce an obvious winner, but Virginia Tech's Helmet Ratings — which score bicycle helmets on how well they reduce concussion risk using its STAR methodology — has one, from an unlikely corner.

The Pikio Si OBLIK, a $379 road helmet from Vancouver-based Pikio Labs, scored 4.61 in the STAR system, where lower is better. That placed it first among the 308 helmets listed. Virginia Tech's own testing summary records the Si as a five-star helmet and its 4.61 as the lowest STAR value — best performance — measured in the bicycle category.

The design is the reason. Pikio's patented OBLIK impact-management system uses independently moving modular components linked by nodal connections, so the helmet can respond omni-directionally and manage both rotational and linear forces in a crash. Escape Collective described the approach as moving the "slip plane" — the layer where most helmets try to manage rotational motion — to the outer surface of the helmet instead.

The rest of the package is conventional but deliberate: dual-density EPS foam with larger "macro cavities" alongside the usual micro-cavities to broaden the range of impact energies absorbed; a polycarbonate reinforcement layer inside the foam; 17 vents; and a claimed weight of 255–298 g depending on size. Pikio says the helmet was wind-tunnel tested at the University of British Columbia's Aerolab, with results "in line with leading premium road helmets."

WIRED's profile of the tiny company — published under the headline "How This Tiny Startup Built the World's Safest Bike Helmet," and inspired, it says, by head-banging woodpeckers and the way their skulls manage repeated impact — is the latest mainstream look at a helmet that independent lab testing, rather than marketing, put on the map. It has also won a Eurobike 2026 award and is sold in Canada and the US only.

The caveat is the one every lab rating carries: STAR scores model real-world crash conditions in a test rig. They are a strong comparative signal, not a guarantee — and at $379, the Si sits at the top of the market it now leads.
