As students and educators return to classrooms this fall, OpenAI is shipping tools aimed squarely at them. The company has introduced three education plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex — K–12 Educator, College Educator and College Student — available through ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers deployments.
A plugin, in OpenAI's framing, is a package of apps, role-specific skills, instructions and common workflows that lets teachers and students get started without building complex prompts from scratch. The K–12 Educator plugin helps teachers plan lessons and create differentiated resources and interactive visuals, with integration to Learning Commons, a nonprofit building public AI datasets, so materials can align to local academic standards. The College Educator plugin supports course design, syllabus updates, interactive assessments and LMS packaging, working across calendars and documents. The College Student plugin acts as a guided tutor: students can practice difficult concepts and generate study guides, quizzes, flashcards and interactive explanations from the sources they choose.
The launch builds on ChatGPT Edu, introduced in 2024 for institution-managed workspaces with enterprise privacy and security, and ChatGPT for Teachers, free for verified U.S. K–12 educators. OpenAI says its education principle is that 'AI should support learning, not shortcut it' — the plugins keep educators in control of pedagogical decisions, grading and agentic actions.
The company cites a widening 'capability overhang' among college-age users: even advanced student users leverage ChatGPT's capabilities roughly 90–99% less than power users. Early ChatGPT Edu data suggests structured access narrows that gap, with students developing more advanced usage patterns over time. The rollout comes alongside the OpenAI Student Collective (applications open for Campus Leads), a free in-person OpenAI Academy program with the Walton Family Foundation for over 1,600 K–12 educators across eight U.S. cities, and ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, giving eligible researchers 12 months of free Pro-level access. In Estonia, ChatGPT Edu already reaches more than 20,000 students and 4,600 teachers.
