Nvidia is deepening its grip on AI infrastructure: the company plans to invest up to $3 billion in Lancium, the power infrastructure developer behind the Stargate data center campus in Abilene, Texas, according to The Information, as reported by Reuters on August 8.
The initial tranche is $2 billion for a stake of roughly 20% in Lancium, which is backed by Blackstone and valued at around $10 billion. An additional $1 billion is contingent on the developer hitting grid-hookup and other milestones as it expands its Texas campus, the report said.
For Nvidia, the deal is about far more than equity. Electricity has become the scarcest resource in the AI buildout, and Lancium specializes in delivering massive, grid-connected power capacity for data centers — precisely the bottleneck the Stargate project, OpenAI's flagship infrastructure partnership, must clear to scale. By taking a seat in Lancium's ownership, Nvidia secures influence over the power feeding some of the most important AI compute in the world.
Neither company has officially confirmed the terms, and the investment remains subject to final documentation. But the move continues a pattern of chipmakers and cloud providers buying their way into the energy layer of the AI economy, where power access now rivals silicon supply as the industry's critical constraint.
