On July 31, NASA leadership and Virginia officials cut the ribbon on the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia — the agency's first major new wind tunnel in more than 40 years.
The state-of-the-art, roughly $57 million facility will support research and technology development that advances NASA's aeronautics, exploration and science goals, including establishing a sustained human presence on the lunar surface through the Artemis program and the development of a Moon Base.
Construction ran from June 2022 to March 2026, and over the coming months the facility will undergo additional data collection and commissioning. The new tunnel restores critical ground-testing capability for next-generation aircraft, drones and vertical-lift vehicles — hardware that must be understood under controlled airflow before it ever flies.
The opening comes as NASA and SpaceX are also advancing wind tunnel tests for the Starship rocket, underscoring how the new facility fits into a broader push to validate ambitious flight vehicles.
