Researchers from MIT and autonomous vehicle company Motional have developed a system called the Concept-Wrapper Network (CW-Net) that translates the decisions of self-driving cars into human-understandable concepts in real-time. Published today in Nature, CW-Net converts the internal reasoning process into transparent concepts like approaching stopped vehicle or close to cyclist. Critically, the explanations are not generated after the fact -- the vehicle decision-making system takes action directly based on these concepts, making them causally faithful. In road tests, CW-Net helped safety drivers catch critical failures -- in one case revealing the experimental planner was hallucinating a phantom stopped vehicle. Performance impact was less than one percent.
