Mojang used Saturday's Minecraft Live event to announce the Sift, a fourth dimension that will join the Overworld, Nether and the End in 2027 — the first new dimension in the main game since the End arrived with version 1.0 in November 2011.

The Sift will ship for both the Java and Bedrock editions; Mojang gave no date more precise than 2027. Players will get an early look at the setting in Minecraft Dungeons II, the action-RPG launching on September 29 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The dimension was developed together with the Dungeons II team, the developers told heise online.

Tone, apparently, matters as much as terrain. The developers describe the Sift as a place you would want to live — a deliberate contrast with the Nether and the End, which they say were designed primarily as challenges. Mojang has not yet detailed the blocks, mobs or mechanics the dimension will bring.

Alongside the new dimension, Mojang announced the next update for the main game: ice caves in cold biomes, inhabited by frozen zombies that pelt players with ice balls and can freeze them in place with melee attacks.

The Sift is also landing at the centre of Minecraft's wider expansion. A Minecraft film sequel is scheduled for July 23, 2027, and the Minecraft World theme area at Chessington World of Adventures near London — announced in March with Merlin Entertainments — is now confirmed to include the world's first Minecraft hotel and a coaster named 'Escape the Nether'.
