Midjourney today unveiled 'Cortex,' a real-time AI video generation platform that marks the most significant leap in generative media since the company's image models first captivated the world. The platform can produce fully rendered 4K cinematic footage — including character animation, consistent lighting, and multi-shot sequences — from natural language prompts in under 30 seconds.
Hollywood's Biggest Bet on Generative AI The announcement was accompanied by blockbuster commercial deals. Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix, and Sony Pictures have each signed multi-year licensing agreements to integrate Cortex into their production pipelines. Industry analysts estimate the combined value of the deals exceeds $2.8 billion.
"This is not a tool for replacing filmmakers — it's a tool for removing the gap between imagination and screen," said Midjourney CEO David Holz at the launch event in San Francisco. "A director can describe a scene in natural language and see it rendered in full fidelity within the same creative session."
Technical Breakthroughs Cortex addresses the two fundamental limitations that had kept AI video generation in the novelty phase: temporal consistency and inference speed. The model employs a novel cascading diffusion architecture that maintains character identity, lighting, and camera position across cuts. A custom inference stack — co-developed with chipmaker Groq — delivers 24 frames per second at 4K resolution with sub-100-millisecond latency per frame.
The Industry Response The launch has been met with both enthusiasm and concern. The Directors Guild of America issued a cautious statement acknowledging the technology's potential while calling for clear guardrails on usage. "This is the moment generative video crossed the threshold from prototype to production tool," said Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI and now CEO of a competing AI media startup.
Pricing and Availability Cortex launches with three tiers: a $49/month individual Creator plan (720p, 30-second clips), a $499/month Studio plan (4K, 5-minute scenes), and an Enterprise tier with custom model fine-tuning and on-premise deployment options. The platform is available immediately in 22 countries.
