Meta's flagship social media platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced widespread outages on Sunday, July 19, 2026, affecting users across multiple continents throughout the day.
According to Downdetector, 4,808 incident reports were filed by Facebook users in the United States alone as of 0746 GMT, with 63 percent of affected users reporting issues accessing the website. Another 2,829 reports were filed by Instagram users experiencing problems with the app as of 0818 GMT. Reuters confirmed that access to both platforms was intermittent in Singapore, and users across the United Kingdom, India, and other regions reported similar disruptions on social media and outage-tracking platforms.
The outage appeared to affect core services including the main feeds, login systems, and messaging functionality across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Some users reported being unable to load their feeds entirely, while others experienced slow loading times or were unexpectedly logged out of their accounts. Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent by Reuters and other media outlets.
This marks the third significant Meta outage in 2026, following a multi-hour disruption in June that took down Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger simultaneously. The recurring nature of these incidents has drawn attention to the concentration risk posed by Meta's unified infrastructure, where a single failure can cascade across multiple platforms serving billions of users.
The outage comes at a sensitive time for Meta, which is spending between $125 and $145 billion this year — largely on AI infrastructure — and recently committed $50 billion to a single data center site in Louisiana. The company has not disclosed whether Sunday's incident was related to infrastructure upgrades, a configuration error, or an external factor.
