IBM has unveiled what it calls the world's first dual-architecture mainframe processor, a chip designed to natively execute both IBM Z (s390x) and ARM instruction sets on the same cores. The announcement, made at the Hot Chips 2026 conference on August 24, represents the first milestone from IBM's collaboration with ARM, established in April 2026.
The processor is built on a 2-nanometer technology node and contains 11 high-performance cores operating at more than 5.7 GHz. It integrates AI inference accelerators for in-transaction fraud detection, a dedicated on-chip data processing unit for I/O acceleration, and a large cache architecture for demanding enterprise workloads.
The key innovation is that the chip does not use separate ARM and IBM Z cores. Instead, each processor core can natively execute both ARM and IBM Z instructions concurrently while maintaining IBM's established performance, security, encryption, and availability characteristics. This eliminates the virtualization overhead typically required to run different architectures on the same hardware.
The design brings ARM's software ecosystem — which supports more than 22 million developers worldwide and spans cloud-native to edge applications — directly to IBM's flagship mainframes and LinuxONE servers. These platforms are used globally for mission-critical transaction processing and data-intensive operations in regulated industries.
"This processor represents a significant architectural advancement for IBM Z and LinuxONE," said Christian Jacobi, CTO and IBM Fellow. "By bringing Arm natively to our platform, we're combining access to one of the industry's fastest-growing software ecosystems with the qualities that have made IBM systems the foundation for how businesses run today."
IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms can scale to hundreds of cores and tens of terabytes of memory, and the new processor is expected to broaden software choice for enterprise computing without compromising security or reliability.
