A bioengineered chewing gum made from lablab beans could become a simple, cheap weapon against oral cancer, according to a new study in Scientific Reports led by Henry Daniell of Penn Dental Medicine. The gum, built on beans containing the antiviral protein FRIL, was tested on oral samples from patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) — the cancer type behind most mouth and throat tumors. The team found bean gum extracts reduced HPV levels by 93% in saliva samples and by 80% in oral rinse samples. When the gum was further engineered to include protegrin, an antimicrobial peptide, a single dose reduced two cancer-linked bacteria — Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum — to almost zero, while leaving the mouth's beneficial bacteria intact. That contrast matters: radiation therapy, the standard treatment, wipes out helpful microbes and can increase Candida yeast. Daniell argues the gum could work as an adjuvant alongside current treatments or as a low-cost prophylaxis against infection and transmission. Oral cavity cancer was the seventh most common cancer in adolescents, young adults and middle-aged adults worldwide in 2022.
