For scale, the next projects in the same feed, anthropics/financial-services, dream-num/univer and agent-substrate/substrate, recorded 438, 255 and 245 stars respectively.
Star velocity of that size rarely comes from organic curiosity. Four-digit daily gains on GitHub cluster around launch moments: a project developers have already read about elsewhere, arriving with a README, a licence and an install command. That is why the trending list, rather than the press release, is where a growing share of developer infrastructure meets its first users. Google has leaned into the pattern for years, publishing JAX, its Gemini SDKs and its Agent Development Kit as standalone repositories that other teams pin, wrap and build on.
The name 'ax' gives little away, and two-letter names travel well on the command line — one reason a new project from a large vendor can accumulate attention before its documentation catches up. The repository page itself remains the authoritative source for scope, dependencies and licensing; a trending feed records attention, never contents.
Caveats apply. Star counts are noisy: launch-day spikes, link aggregators and coordinated voting can produce a curve that flattens within a week. The durable signals are whether commits and contributors keep pace once the launch traffic fades, and whether the project begins appearing as a dependency in other repositories — something considerably harder to manufacture than a star count.
