Germany is reeling from a third suspected sabotage attack on its electricity grid in a single week, in what authorities increasingly describe as a pattern of coordinated assaults on critical infrastructure.
The latest incident targeted a substation in Bergheim, near Cologne, where police discovered a detonating device after a technical fault caused several power lines to fail. The discovery escalated the investigation from vandalism to a terror probe.
The attacks follow two earlier incidents this week: one affecting a substation in western Germany near a coal-fired power plant, and another disrupting power distribution in eastern Germany. Reuters and France24 reported that Russian hybrid warfare is being investigated as a possible motive, with Germany summoning the Russian envoy.
The pattern echoes similar incidents across Europe, including the 2022 attack on the Nord Stream pipelines and previous substation attacks in the UK and France. German security officials have warned that repeated attacks on transformer stations — which are difficult to replace quickly — could cause prolonged blackouts affecting millions.
The incidents come at a particularly sensitive time as Europe grapples with energy security concerns and Germany continues its transition away from nuclear and fossil fuel power.
