NotebookLM Is No More — Welcome Gemini Notebook

Google has officially retired the NotebookLM name, rebranding its popular AI-powered research tool as "Gemini Notebook" effective July 16, 2026. The move aligns the product with Google's broader Gemini AI brand and comes with significant new capabilities.

What Changed

First unveiled as "Project Tailwind" at Google I/O 2023, the tool launched as NotebookLM — short for Notebook Language Model. The new name is simpler and more brand-coherent.

"Gemini Notebook is much friendlier than having 'language model' in the name," Google noted in its announcement. The current logo has been updated with the familiar blue-purple Gemini gradient.

Crucially, Gemini Notebook remains a standalone product "focused on being your premier research tool." It's not being folded into the Gemini app entirely, though notebooks are now available in the Gemini app for chat organization, and will soon surface in Google Search's AI Mode.

New Capabilities: Code Execution & Cloud Computing

Each notebook now comes with a secure cloud computer, enabling users to natively write and execute code directly within their research sessions. Google describes this as enabling "complex data analysis grounded in your sources," with "entirely new output formats and deeper analysis."

This feature is rolling out to Google AI Pro subscribers on the web over the coming weeks, following its initial launch to AI Ultra users last month as part of the broader Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity upgrade.

By the Numbers

Google shared that Gemini Notebook has reached 30 million users and is used by over 600,000 organizations — a testament to the product's quiet but powerful growth since its 2023 launch.

What It Means

The rebranding is part of Google's broader strategy to consolidate its AI offerings under the Gemini umbrella, creating a coherent ecosystem from the chatbot to the research tool to developer APIs. For users, the practical experience remains similar — but the addition of code execution transforms it from a research assistant into a data analysis platform.
