DARPA and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have launched AI Forge, a new initiative designed to accelerate AI breakthroughs for national security. The program establishes a research forum connecting universities, frontier AI companies, and U.S. government defense and intelligence agencies.
AI Forge aims to address critical AI challenges that fall outside the scope of typical commercial research, including AI reliability, security, and capability gaps relevant to defense applications. The program will fund university research teams working on these problems, with grants ranging from $750,000 and above.
The initiative was announced in June 2026 and is expected to launch in full during summer 2026. It represents a growing recognition that maintaining leadership in AI requires not just industry investment but also coordinated government-academic partnerships focused on national security applications.
The program comes at a time when AI capabilities are advancing rapidly but raise significant security concerns. According to the International AI Safety Report 2026, AI agents have demonstrated the ability to identify 77% of real-world software vulnerabilities — ranking in the top 5% of competing teams, most of which were human. This dual-use nature of AI capabilities makes both offensive and defensive applications a priority for national security planning.
AI Forge follows a broader pattern of U.S. government investment in AI for defense, building on programs like the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) and recent executive orders on AI safety and security.
