The fintech industry's AI-driven restructuring has a new name: Chime. The digital bank told Reuters it is cutting 10% of its workforce — nearly 150 of its roughly 1,500 employees — to prioritize "smaller, more focused teams" and take advantage of efficiencies from artificial intelligence.

CEO Chris Britt framed the move as leveraging AI to do more with less, part of a wave sweeping financial technology. Visa also cited AI in recent layoffs, and analysts say AI investment is intensifying fears about tech-sector employment even as companies post record profits.

Chime, one of the largest US neobanks, had been preparing for a potential IPO in 2026. The cuts come as investors scrutinize AI spending across the industry — from Microsoft's record cloud-driven market-cap gain to OpenAI's price cuts on smaller models.

For the broader market, the layoffs are a concrete signal that AI efficiency is starting to show up in staffing decisions, not just in datacenter budgets.
