Critics have noted that Musk's technological vision appears heavily influenced by pulp science fiction.
The proposal comes against a backdrop of significant skepticism about The Boring Company's track record of announcing ambitious projects that fail to materialize. Tunnel systems planned for Chicago, Los Angeles, and a route between New York City and Washington, D.C. were all announced with great fanfare before being quietly shelved.
The company does operate a working transportation system in Las Vegas combining tunnels and surface routes, and recently raised a $3 billion funding round led by the United Arab Emirates. However, a Hyperloop project would be orders of magnitude more complex than its existing Vegas loop, involving vacuum-tube technology at intercity scale that no entity has yet demonstrated commercially.
