AMD CEO Lisa Su took the stage at the company's Advancing AI 2026 event this week to unveil the Helios rack-scale AI system — a purpose-built platform designed for gigawatt-scale AI training — and to make a series of blockbuster announcements that cement AMD's position as Nvidia's primary challenger.

Helios Rack-Scale System Helios is AMD's answer to Nvidia's DGX and GB200 platforms — a complete rack-scale solution integrating AMD's Instinct MI450 series GPUs with high-speed Infinity Architecture interconnects, liquid cooling, and AMD's own networking fabric.

"Helios represents a fundamental rethinking of AI infrastructure," Su said during the keynote.

Investments and Partnerships The event served as the backdrop for AMD's landmark $5 billion investment in Anthropic, under which Anthropic will deploy 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs. AMD also confirmed details of its OpenAI deal, issuing a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock.

Market Forecast Su forecast the AI chip market would reach $1.4 trillion by 2030, up from approximately $200 billion today — a compound annual growth rate of nearly 40%.

AMD is positioning Helios as a more open alternative to Nvidia's proprietary CUDA ecosystem, emphasizing industry-standard interconnects and support for open-source frameworks.
