Alibaba's open-weight Qwen model family has crossed 3 billion downloads in the past six months, eclipsing Meta's Llama and Google's Gemma to become the world's most-downloaded AI model family, according to reports published this week.
The company says the Qwen family now spans more than 460 models, with over 300,000 derivatives built on top of them by the wider community. Open-weight models — whose parameters are published for anyone to download and fine-tune, unlike the "closed" models served only through APIs — have become a central front in the global AI race.
The milestone follows months of Qwen climbing open-model leaderboards and being adopted by a widening circle of companies, including Apple, which began letting China-market Mac users tap Qwen through Siri and Writing Tools earlier this year.
The download tally is more than a popularity contest. Every derivative built on Qwen is a dependency that Alibaba Cloud can serve: the company monetizes the family by pairing it with its cloud platform, offering the models through Model Studio and APIs for enterprises that want to run them on their own infrastructure. Download leadership, in other words, converts into paid compute and enterprise deals.
It also lands amid a widening global debate over open-weight AI. Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta and Google have urged policymakers not to overregulate open models, while Anthropic has argued for more caution about unrestricted access. Alibaba's numbers give the open camp a powerful data point: the most widely distributed models today are not necessarily the most hyped — they are the ones anyone can download and build on.
Analysts note the achievement reflects demand from developers in emerging markets, where self-hosted models offer lower costs and more control than API access to frontier systems. Alibaba has also begun testing new business models for Qwen beyond cloud usage, signaling that it intends to turn the family's popularity into a durable revenue stream.
For now, the message from Hangzhou is clear: in the open-model race, distribution is the moat — and Qwen is the most distributed family in the world.
