A cryptocurrency firm backed by President Donald Trump has entered into a business relationship with a Hong Kong-based venture offering access to AI models developed by Chinese technology companies facing U.S. national security restrictions — a link that cuts against the administration's aggressive posture toward Chinese AI.
An investigation by Reuters found that World Liberty Financial (WLF), the Trump family-backed crypto venture, is collaborating with WorldClaw, a platform that lets users interact with dozens of AI models through a single service. Nearly half of the roughly 90 models available on WorldClaw come from Chinese companies — including Alibaba, Baidu and Z.ai — some of which have been placed on U.S. government lists over national security or military-related concerns.
The arrangement is not, in itself, illegal, but it creates a striking contrast with the Trump administration's increasingly aggressive approach to Chinese technology. Washington is pressing allies to choose between competing U.S. and Chinese AI ecosystems and has tightened controls around advanced semiconductors.
The relationship also has a cryptocurrency component: WorldClaw accepts WLF's USD1 stablecoin and the company's WLFI token as payment. Because the Trump family has a financial interest in World Liberty, increased use of those tokens can generate financial benefits for the family. Trump's sons have also publicly promoted WorldClaw, according to Reuters.
The disclosure pulls together three of the most politically sensitive technology sectors — cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence and U.S.-China tech competition — into a single commercial relationship. It also sharpens a growing debate in Washington over whether access to Chinese open-weight models should be restricted: unlike semiconductor equipment, software models are hard to control at the border, since their weights can be downloaded, modified and deployed without the developer's infrastructure.
