The News That Matters
Together AI has announced a strategic partnership with HUMAIN, a Saudi state-backed AI infrastructure company, to build a 250MW AI data center in the kingdom. The deal is expected to generate over $5 billion in gross annualized revenue in its first year, making it one of the largest AI infrastructure agreements ever signed.
What the Numbers Show
The partnership provides Together AI with 250 megawatts of electricity and 120,000 semiconductors from a Saudi-based data center. CEO Vipul Ved Prakash told the New York Times that the deal will nearly triple Together's compute capacity. The company is pursuing this expansion as US community backlash and local moratoriums on data center construction make domestic buildouts increasingly difficult.
The $5 billion annualized revenue figure is striking for a company that was valued at $1.25 billion in its last funding round. It suggests the Saudi partnership represents a step-change in Together's business model — from a cloud inference provider to a major infrastructure operator.
Why Saudi Arabia
The choice of Saudi Arabia reflects a broader trend in AI infrastructure: companies are increasingly looking outside the US for large-scale compute capacity. The kingdom has committed massive resources to becoming an AI hub, backed by sovereign wealth fund investments and government initiatives.
For Together AI, Saudi Arabia offers several advantages: - Energy availability: The 250MW commitment would be difficult to secure in US markets where grid capacity is constrained - Regulatory environment: The kingdom has been actively courting AI investment with favorable terms - Geographic position: Proximity to European and Asian markets reduces latency for inference workloads
The Bigger Picture
The Together AI-HUMAIN deal is part of a pattern of AI infrastructure investment flowing to the Middle East. The region has emerged as a major destination for compute capacity as US markets face headwinds from community opposition, environmental concerns, and regulatory uncertainty.
