A new AI tool has demonstrated the ability to detect signs of heart failure and heart valve disease from routine electrocardiograms in under 2 seconds, significantly outperforming experienced cardiologists in identifying structural heart problems.

The tool, described as 'superhuman' by researchers, accurately identified 77% of structural heart problems in 3,200 electrocardiograms compared to 64% accuracy achieved by 13 experienced cardiologists. The system analyzes standard ECG readings to flag potential heart issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Heart failure and heart valve disease are among the most common forms of heart disease, and early detection is crucial for improving patient outcomes. The AI tool's ability to rapidly screen large numbers of ECGs could transform how healthcare systems approach cardiac screening, particularly in areas with limited access to specialist care.

The research, published in Nature Medicine, represents a significant advance in the application of artificial intelligence to medical diagnostics. Unlike many AI medical tools that require specialized imaging or tests, this system works with standard ECGs that are already routinely performed in healthcare settings worldwide.

Researchers note that while the AI tool shows remarkable promise, it would be used as an aid to clinical decision-making rather than a replacement for medical professionals. The system could help prioritize patients for further investigation and ensure that those with hidden heart problems receive timely treatment.
