Samsung Bets Big on European AI
Samsung is in advanced talks to invest hundreds of millions of euros — potentially up to €1 billion — in French AI startup Mistral, at a valuation of approximately €20 billion, according to a Financial Times report published on July 22.
The investment would make Samsung one of the largest strategic investors in Mistral, alongside existing backers including Microsoft. The move signals a major push by the South Korean tech giant into the AI arms race, as it seeks to integrate advanced AI into its consumer electronics, semiconductors, and mobile devices.
A Strategic Bet on European Tech Sovereignty
Mistral, founded in 2023 by former Meta and Google researchers, has rapidly emerged as Europe's leading AI champion. The €20 billion valuation would represent a significant jump from its previous rounds, reflecting the explosive growth of the foundational AI market.
The talks come just one day after Microsoft announced its own multi-billion-dollar expansion of its partnership with Mistral, aimed at building out 1 gigawatt of AI compute capacity in Europe by 2030.
Why It Matters
For Samsung, the investment would provide access to Mistral's open-weight AI models, which could be deployed across Samsung's vast ecosystem — from Galaxy smartphones and smart home devices to semiconductor fabrication and memory chips.
For Europe, the deal reinforces Mistral's position as a credible alternative to US-dominated AI giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, strengthening the continent's push for 'tech sovereignty' amid growing regulatory scrutiny of Big Tech.
The Bigger Picture
The investment is part of a broader wave of AI infrastructure spending sweeping across industries. Samsung's potential Mistral bet follows parallel moves by other Asian tech conglomerates to secure AI capabilities, and comes as the semiconductor giant also invests heavily in AI memory chips (HBM) for Nvidia and AMD.
Neither Samsung nor Mistral has officially commented on the talks, which sources say are ongoing and may not result in a finalized deal.
