OpenAI has launched a new plug-in that connects ChatGPT directly to Apple's Messages app on Mac, marking the AI lab's deepest integration yet with Apple's communication ecosystem.

The Apple Messages plug-in, announced August 20, 2026, allows ChatGPT to read, search, draft, and send text messages on Apple Silicon Macs. The feature is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and supports all three messaging formats: iMessage, SMS, and RCS.

Users can now ask ChatGPT to search through their message history, catch up on conversations, draft replies, and send them directly — all without leaving the chatbot interface. The integration requires the ChatGPT desktop app running on a Mac with Apple Silicon.

The move signals OpenAI's push to make ChatGPT a central hub for personal productivity, extending its reach from code generation and document analysis into direct communication. By embedding itself into Apple's Messages app, ChatGPT gains access to users' real-world conversations and contacts — a significant step in the race among AI companies to become the default AI assistant.

The launch comes during a period of rapid expansion for ChatGPT. OpenAI recently slashed GPT-5.6 pricing by 80%, and the platform has crossed roughly one billion weekly active users. The company is also reportedly gaining ground on Anthropic among business users, according to new data analyzed by TechCrunch.
