Amazon's smart home division Ring is adopting a new encryption standard called TAKE (Throw Away the Key Encryption) as the default for video encryption. The system uses rotating encryption keys temporarily stored in the cloud that are deleted within 24 hours, allowing Ring to process videos for smart features like Smart Alerts. TAKE was developed on Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an open standard from the IETF. Users who lose device access can recover keys by standing near Ring cameras or using passphrases. TAKE rolls out from September as the worldwide default, though users can still opt for full end-to-end encryption. The move comes amid ongoing criticism of Ring's Familiar Faces facial recognition feature.
