Open-source AI startup Reflection AI has activated its landmark computing deal with SpaceX today, July 1, 2026, committing $150 million per month through 2029 for access to Nvidia's latest GB300 AI chips at the Colossus 2 data center near Memphis, Tennessee.
The deal, valued at up to $6.3 billion over its term, is one of the largest open AI infrastructure commitments to date. Either company retains the option to terminate with 90 days' notice after the first three months.
Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers, Reflection AI positions itself as the open-weight alternative to closed frontier labs like Anthropic and OpenAI. The startup's open-source strategy has gained traction following the U.S. government's ban on Anthropic's closed models, Fable and Mythos.
"Recent events highlight how important open source is to the AI ecosystem," a Reflection AI spokesperson said. "More nations and enterprises recognize the risks of exclusively depending on closed models."
The Colossus data center was originally built by xAI (now part of SpaceX) for internal AI efforts. As SpaceX's internal AI pursuits shifted, it began leasing its valuable Nvidia chip inventory to outside AI labs. The Reflection deal follows larger SpaceX compute agreements with Anthropic ($1.25B/month) and Google ($920M/month), both also running through July 2029.
