PI-Desktop is a local, cross-platform desktop client for AI-powered coding agents built on Electron with a Rust host core. It lets developers bring their own models from OpenAI, Anthropic, local gateways like Ollama or LM Studio, or any OpenAI-compatible API, and switch between them per session.
The core architecture centers on Agent, Plan, and Goal workflows: Agent executes tasks autonomously, Plan creates an implementation plan that the user approves before execution begins, and Goal defines an objective with acceptance criteria where the agent chooses the path. Privileged actions like file access and command execution pass through a permission layer.
Additional capabilities include Subagents for delegating independent work, an MCP server for connecting external tools, a plugin marketplace, Skills for reusable instructions, session imports from Claude Code, Codex, and Pi, and context checkpoints that survive application restarts.
The Rust host core owns permissions, filesystem, SQLite, and secrets, while Electron handles desktop orchestration and a React renderer (without Node integration) provides the interface. Data is stored locally as JSONL with a SQLite index; no PI-Desktop account is required and no mandatory relay exists between you and your model provider.
PI-Desktop is currently in Early Preview (0.14.x line) under active development. The source is available on GitHub under the LGPL v3.0 license.
