OpenAI claims to have solved the Navier-Stokes problem, one of seven Millennium Prize Problems worth $1 million each. The company used an internal AI model more powerful than GPT-6 Astra with 10,000 concurrent agents.
Controversy erupted when NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster, who published related findings the day before with Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge, questioned whether OpenAI accessed their Codex session data. Buckmaster found OpenAI produced a proof using a route he and Alpöge had been working on with Codex and Claude.
OpenAI stated no specific user data was accessed but cannot rule out de-identified training data helped. Buckmaster countered OpenAI admitted using training data from after their result. OpenAI's Sebastien Bubeck said proofs differ significantly. OpenAI won't claim the prize.
