OpenAI is losing another senior executive: Brad Lightcap, the company's special projects lead and former chief operating officer, said on Tuesday he is leaving the AI startup to start a new venture.
Lightcap, one of the longest-serving members of OpenAI's leadership, will remain with the company for several more weeks to ease the transition, according to Reuters and The Information. He did not disclose details of the new venture.
The departure continues a wave of leadership churn at OpenAI. In April, the company reshuffled its executive team: Lightcap moved from COO into a special projects role as part of a broader reorganization, with former Slack CEO Denise Dresser, who joined as chief revenue officer, taking over parts of his commercial duties. The reshuffle was widely read as preparation for a potential IPO.
The news lands days after OpenAI completed a $7 billion tender offer that let employees sell shares at a valuation of about $852 billion — a step many analysts see as part of the runway toward an eventual public listing. A senior executive's exit, even an orderly one, adds to the question of who will steer the company's next chapter.
Lightcap joined OpenAI from Y Combinator in 2018, before ChatGPT existed, and was central to building the commercial engine behind the chatbot's explosion. He oversaw business operations, enterprise sales and strategic partnerships as the company grew into one of the world's most valuable private firms. His departure marks the latest sign that OpenAI's senior bench is thinning just as it scales up for what could be its defining financial chapter. OpenAI has not yet named a successor for his current role.
