At its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, OpenAI rolled out a set of ChatGPT features that read less like a chatbot upgrade and more like an office suite.
The centerpiece is Space, a shared workspace inside ChatGPT where coworkers and their AI agents can collaborate on documents and tasks. "Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive," CEO Sam Altman said during the presentation. "But spaces feel alive." A page inside a Space can carry standing instructions — Altman gave the example of a page that checks a team channel and updates itself with what it finds.
Alongside Space, OpenAI introduced Pages, a document editor it describes as "a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration," where users can write, research, generate charts, create images or visualize information. The company also launched collaborative slides that can be generated simply by talking about them inside ChatGPT, then edited and commented on by multiple people and agents at once. Both are aimed squarely at Google Docs, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
The workplace push is paired with Dots, OpenAI's newly launched AI agent personas that can carry out tasks on a user's behalf — the same agents that populate Spaces and can be summoned into documents and slides.
The timing sharpens a partnership that has been getting more complicated by the year. Microsoft has been OpenAI's closest partner since its earliest days, but the two now compete for the same enterprise seats: Microsoft 365 Copilot on one side, ChatGPT-as-workplace-software on the other. Microsoft and Salesforce, meanwhile, have spent the past year bolting AI features onto their own products.
For OpenAI, the bet is that the interface knowledge workers already open every day — a chat box — can absorb the functions of the tools they used to keep in separate windows. Whether IT departments agree is a different question: procurement is already crowded, and Microsoft's advantage is not the software so much as the contracts.
OpenAI announced the features at Dev Day, alongside a separate batch of developer-focused Codex updates.
