OpenAI has officially retired the standalone DALL·E GPT from ChatGPT, effective August 30, 2026 — marking the end of a five-year run for one of the company's most iconic products.
DALL·E first debuted in January 2021, wowing the world with its ability to create original illustrations from simple text descriptions. It evolved through major updates in 2022 and 2023, becoming one of OpenAI's most recognizable products and helping fuel the broader public interest in generative AI.
But OpenAI has increasingly shifted toward integrating capabilities directly into ChatGPT rather than maintaining separate tools. ChatGPT Images, built on the newer gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini models, now takes over as the primary image-generation platform. It's available across all subscription tiers — including free accounts — and offers more advanced editing features and tighter integration with other ChatGPT functions.
Crucially, the retirement applies only to the official DALL·E GPT experience. Custom GPTs built by users or organizations that have image-generation enabled are not affected.
OpenAI is encouraging users to download any images they want to preserve, though the company has not explicitly stated what will happen to images stored within DALL·E GPT conversations after the shutdown.
The DALL·E GPT retirement is the latest in a series of consolidations. Earlier in 2026, OpenAI retired the DALL·E API for developers. The o3 model left ChatGPT on August 26 after a 90-day sunset period. ChatGPT Atlas, the company's experimental browser initiative, shut down on August 9. And Sora 2, its video-generation system, is scheduled for full shutdown on September 24.
Taken together, these changes signal OpenAI's strategy to funnel all AI creation — text, images, video, and browsing — into ChatGPT as its central hub, rather than maintaining a constellation of standalone products.
