OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated version of its AI chatbot tailored for users aged 13 to 17, with significantly stronger safety protections than the standard experience.
The new experience, announced Monday, includes stronger default safeguards around sensitive topics such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit content. It also prevents romantic conversations and includes parental controls that allow caregivers to monitor their teen's usage.
For users under 18, ChatGPT for Teens applies age-appropriate safeguards designed to reduce exposure to content that may be harmful or inappropriate. The platform also introduces study features and gentle usage reminders to encourage healthy engagement with the technology.
The launch comes amid growing concern about AI's impact on young people, with parents, educators, and lawmakers increasingly calling for stronger protections. OpenAI said the dedicated experience was developed in consultation with child safety experts and represents a more thoughtful approach to serving younger users while maintaining the tool's educational value.
