OpenAI disclosed on July 31 that its AI models — spanning ChatGPT, Codex, and ChatGPT Work — now reach more than 1 billion active users and more than 2 million businesses worldwide. The milestone was announced alongside significant price reductions for GPT-5.6, with cuts of up to 80% on the Luna tier.

"Our models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses," OpenAI stated. "As people gain confidence in the technology, we see them integrating AI into their daily workflows in increasingly meaningful ways."

The 1 billion figure represents the total across all of OpenAI's products, not just ChatGPT's weekly active users (which stood at 900 million as of February 2026). ChatGPT separately crossed 1 billion monthly active app users in May 2026, making it the fastest app in history to reach that threshold.

The announcement came as OpenAI reduced GPT-5.6 Luna pricing by 80% and GPT-5.6 Terra by 20%, intensifying competition with Anthropic, whose Claude has been posting rapid user growth. Business Insider reported that OpenAI is gaining on Anthropic among business users, with Ramp data showing increasing enterprise adoption of GPT-5.6 and Sol models.

The dual milestones — 1 billion users and 2 million businesses — underscore OpenAI's transition from a research lab to a mass-market AI platform. The price cuts suggest OpenAI is prioritizing market penetration and usage volume over per-query margins as the AI industry enters a phase of aggressive scaling.
