The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled approximately 1.5 million Ocoopa rechargeable hand warmers after the lithium-ion batteries inside them were linked to overheating, fires, and at least one death.
The agency logged 1,480 reports of the devices overheating, including 15 fires and 350 burn injuries. An 83-year-old woman in San Diego died earlier this year in an incident tied to the recalled products. The affected models were sold through Amazon, Walmart, and Ocoopa's own online store, and were imported by Shenzhen Street Cat Technology.
CPSC warns that the batteries "can overheat and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards." Consumers who own a recalled unit are urged to stop using it immediately and contact Ocoopa Direct for a full refund.
The recall is one of the largest consumer electronics actions of the year and highlights the safety pressure on budget electronics that rely on high-density lithium batteries — a category regulators have scrutinized since a wave of e-bike and hoverboard battery incidents.
