France's Mistral AI on Tuesday announced Mistral Large 4, a roughly one-trillion-parameter open-weight model it markets under the nickname 'Le Chonk' and describes as the most capable open-weight system built outside China.

The model is available now in preview, with the full weights — the trained parameters that let anyone download and run it on their own hardware — scheduled for release on October 27. Mistral says the gap gives developers, cybersecurity leaders and state authorities time to test the system in real-world settings before it goes fully public. The company highlights strength in cyber and security tasks, coding and manufacturing, and positions ML4 as a European, sovereign alternative for defence-sensitive customers.

Mistral's announcement lands a day after Nvidia-backed Reflection AI unveiled Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open-weight model, as Western labs push back against the recent lead of Chinese open-weight systems. Mistral, which raised €3 billion in a Series D in September at a valuation above €21 billion, has made sovereign, open-weight AI its central pitch in Europe.

As with any vendor benchmark claim, Mistral's 'best outside China' framing has not been independently verified across common leaderboards, and the company's chief executive has been criticised for asserting a cybersecurity edge without publishing benchmarks or scores.
